Old Down’s roots stretch back to the 18th century, when the manor was originally built as a private country residence overlooking the Severn Estuary. Over the years it has transformed from a family home into one of South Gloucestershire’s most recognisable venues, celebrated for weddings, events and its sweeping countryside views. The estate also holds a unique place in modern cultural history — it was once owned by musician Mike Oldfield, the composer behind the iconic 1973 album Tubular Bells. During his time there, the manor became a creative sanctuary, linking the property not only to architectural heritage but also to one of the most influential instrumental records of its era.
Today, Old Down continues to honour its historic character while embracing contemporary luxury, making it the perfect setting for a tranquil spa retreat. Our brief was to deliver high-quality external works that enhanced the sense of calm and elegance expected of a premium wellness space, while remaining in harmony with the manor’s traditional stone architecture and landscaped grounds. From precise paving lines to carefully integrated planting areas and water features, every element was approached with attention to detail and long-term durability in mind.
Being trusted with a project at Old Down was more than just another contract for our team — it was a privilege to contribute to the next chapter of an estate that blends centuries of history with cultural significance and modern refinement.
